Policies & Notices

Privacy, fees, and your rights.

Everything here is written plainly on purpose. If anything is unclear, ask us before you schedule.

Notice of Privacy Practices

Cairn Integrative Psychiatry is required by law to protect the privacy of your health information and to give you notice of our legal duties and privacy practices. We use and disclose your protected health information for treatment, payment, and health care operations, and otherwise only with your written authorization or as permitted by law. You have the right to inspect and request a copy of your record, request an amendment, request restrictions on certain uses and disclosures, request confidential communications, receive an accounting of disclosures, and file a complaint. The complete Notice of Privacy Practices is posted on this site and provided to you at intake.

Website privacy

This website does not collect protected health information. If you contact us through the site or by email, we use that information only to respond to you and to determine whether we are a good fit. Standard email is not a secure channel. Please do not include detailed clinical information in it. Once you are an established patient, clinical communication takes place through our secure patient portal.

Good Faith Estimate: your right under the No Surprises Act

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your care will cost. Under the law, health care providers must give patients who are uninsured or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychiatric evaluation and follow-up care. Your estimate is itemized, listing expected services with their codes and charges. When you schedule at least three business days in advance, you receive it within one business day of scheduling; when you schedule at least ten business days in advance, within three business days. You may also request one at any time before scheduling, and receive it within three business days. If any single bill comes in at least $400 more than its Good Faith Estimate, you may dispute it through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process. Keep a copy of your estimate. For questions or more information, visit cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

Fees, testing costs, and insurance

Cairn is a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance. Appointment fees are listed on this site and are due at the time of service. Laboratory and specialty testing, when clinically appropriate, is billed separately by the laboratory and is not included in appointment fees; costs vary by panel and by whether your insurance covers the test. We discuss anticipated costs with you before recommending any testing, and nothing is mandatory. A superbill is available if you would like to seek out-of-network reimbursement; we cannot guarantee that your plan will reimburse.

Telehealth, in-person visits, and licensure

Melissa Kanter, PMHNP-BC is licensed in New Hampshire and Maine. Most care is delivered by telehealth, and you must be physically located in New Hampshire or Maine at the time of each video appointment. Limited in-person appointments are available in Conway, New Hampshire and Fryeburg, Maine. Telehealth is not appropriate for every clinical situation; if your needs require a higher level of care, we will discuss that and help you find appropriate referrals.

This website and this practice do not provide emergency or crisis services, and messages are not monitored around the clock. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency department.

Not medical advice

Content on this site, including the Learn articles, is for general educational purposes and does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and does not create a provider-patient relationship. Always consult a qualified clinician about your own situation.

Accessibility

We want this site to be usable by everyone. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA and review the site periodically against that standard. If you encounter a barrier, please contact us and we will work to fix it and to provide the information you need in another format.
